family session what to wear

Every time I book a new client I get asked “What should we wear?”. This is such a great question and an important topic to discuss with your photographer!

If you have ever had a session with me you have heard me mention time and time again, neutrals and earth tones! I could shout it from the rooftops. NEUTRALS AND EARTH TONES! slight echo rings in the distance.

But what does that all mean Basil? Yes I just quoted Austin Powers and kudos to you if you got the reference.

This means soft colours such as beige, white, grey, and pastels. Earth tones such as mossy greens, and light browns work great as well for outdoor sessions. These colours all come together to help produce the light and organic photos you see throughout my work. Heres a little colour palette to get the juices flowing.

So what does this NOT mean?

I really only have two no-no’s. Orange and neon colours. Although I typically suggest steering away from black, red or vibrant colours, if those are your jam, then do you! If showing up in head to toe sequins is your thing, bring it. Because at the end of the day we still want to showcase your personality!

It is also best to avoid bold patterns such as thick stripes (we love a good floral print over here though!) and any clothing that may have logos and words on it. We want your photos to be timeless. Remember, you invest a lot for these sessions so its important to also invest in your wardrobe.

My two major tips for styling your family:

  1. Mama comes first. Pick your outfit before everyone else, and then find a colour palette that works well with yours.

  2. Compliment, don’t coordinate. Rather than matching everyone in the same white shirt and blue jeans, change it up and pick pieces that compliment each other.

Alright, so you’re ready to start searching for the perfect outfit, but where do you start? Here are some of my favourite sites to help get you started.
